How to Legally Experience a Psychedelic Plant Medicine Journey

As research in psychedelic medicine grows, we often get questions about the best way to legally experience the power of plant medicine. Full disclosure: psychedelics remain illegal in most places, but with state legislation changing every month, the number of legal and decriminalized psychedelic options continues to grow.

Option 1: Work with a Local Psychedelic Guide (in Decriminalized Areas)

Some cities and states have decriminalized natural medicine, creating space for underground, but legal, psychedelic guides and facilitators. While these individuals may not be officially licensed, many have extensive experience in harm reduction, therapeutic support and clinical settings.

Pros:

  • Personalized, one-on-one support tailored to your needs

  • Familiar, comfortable environment (your home or a trusted space)

  • Opportunity for deep integration support after the journey

Cons:

  • Lack of regulation: quality and experience of guides vary widely

  • Still legally ambiguous, even in decriminalized areas

  • Can be expensive, with costs ranging from several hundred to thousands of dollars

What to Search:

  • Psychedelic integration therapists (some licensed clinicians offer guided sessions in decriminalized areas), psychedelic guides

  • Local psychedelic communities or harm reduction groups

  • Word-of-mouth referrals from trusted sources (this is something we often discuss with clients in our Psychedelic Curiosity Consults)

Option 2: Solo Journey at Home with a Trusted Trip Sitter (in Decriminalized Areas)

If you live in a place where psychedelics are decriminalized, you may choose to do a solo journey at home with a trip sitter. A sitter is a sober, trusted person who provides safety and support during your experience. (Guiding clients through this type of experience is our specialty!)

Pros:

  • Comfortable, familiar setting

  • Full control over your environment and experience

  • More affordable than retreats or guided sessions

Cons:

  • No professional support, requires thorough preparation

  • Harder to navigate challenging experiences alone

  • Some legal gray areas, even in decriminalized places (it’s not the same as legal use)

How to Do It Safely:

  • Choose an experienced trip sitter who understands harm reduction

  • Spend plenty of time preparing for your experience, understanding the nuances of what could come up (including past traumas) working with an experienced coach in advance

  • Have a plan for integration afterward (if you’re working with us, we’ll schedule your psychedelic prep sessions and integration sessions in advance)

Option 3: Visit Oregon or Colorado for a Legal Experience

In the last several years, Oregon and Colorado have changed their laws about plant medicine, including psychedelics:

  • Oregon: Offers licensed psilocybin service centers where adults (21+) can legally take psilocybin under supervision.

  • Colorado: Has decriminalized certain psychedelics for personal use and started offering regulated psilocybin access through licensed healing centers, facilitators and cultivators in 2025.

Pros:

  • Fully legal psilocybin therapy (with trained and licensed facilitators)

  • Decriminalized personal use in Colorado allows for flexibility in where you can experience psychedelics

  • No need to leave the U.S. for a legal experience

Cons:

  • Psilocybin services from a licensed provider can be expensive ($3,000+ per session, plus travel and accommodations), because state licensing programs come with significant annual fees and education costs

  • Requires travel and virtual consults if you don’t live nearby

What to Search:

Option 4: Attend a Legal Psychedelic Retreat (International and U.S. Options)

There are well-established retreat centers where psychedelics like ayahuasca, psilocybin and iboga are legally administered in a ceremonial or therapeutic setting.

Pros:

  • Fully legal and often led by experienced facilitators

  • Structured support with preparation and integration

  • Immersive healing environment, often in nature

Cons:

  • Travel costs can be significant

  • Group settings may not suit everyone’s comfort level

  • Some retreat centers lack proper medical screening or safety protocols

What to Search:

  • Psilocybin Retreats: Oregon, Colorado, Jamaica, the Netherlands

  • Ayahuasca Retreats: Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and some religious organizations in the U.S.

  • Iboga Retreats: Gabon, Costa Rica, Mexico

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Option for You

The best way to legally experience a psychedelic journey depends on your comfort level, budget, and personal needs.

  • If you want a personalized experience: A local psychedelic guide (in a decriminalized area) might be the best fit.

  • If you want to explore psychedelics privately: A solo journey with a sitter (where decriminalized) could work, but requires extra caution and preparation. If you want professional support in the U.S.: Colorado and Oregon’s psilocybin centers are a good option.

  • If you prefer a traditional ceremonial approach: A legal ayahuasca or psilocybin retreat may be ideal.

No matter which path you choose, education, preparation, and integration are key. If you have questions about psychedelics, harm reduction, or finding safe resources, book a call with us to explore your options.
