How Knowing Your Personal Values Can Help You Find Your Purpose and Live a More Meaningful Life

Defining Your Values Changes Everything

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t have a defined list of core values, but here’s why they matter: your values offer a guiding light as you make decisions aligned with what matters most to you.

Your personal values are shaped by your unique life experiences. They evolve from what you’ve been through, both the highs and the lows, and they reflect your emotional needs, your sense of security, and your vision of personal and professional fulfillment. Whether you’re conscious of it or not, your values operate like an internal compass, influencing both your deliberate choices and your unconscious intuition.

If you’re looking to find your purpose or live a more meaningful life, getting clear on your core values is one of the most powerful steps you can take.

What Are Personal Values, and Why Do They Matter?

Personal values are the principles or qualities that are most important to you. They define what "good," "right," or "important" means in your world. For some people, values might include freedom, honesty, adventure, or compassion. For others, it might be structure, family, creativity, or personal growth.

When your daily choices and environments align with your values, you feel energized, fulfilled, and at peace. When they don’t, you’ll likely feel drained, stuck, or disconnected, even if everything “looks good” from the outside.

Think of your values as your internal GPS. When you’re faced with a big decision, they help you get oriented. When you feel overwhelmed or confused, they can bring you back to center. And when you’re trying to find your purpose, your values offer clues about what truly matters to you.

My Top 3 Values

  • Independence

  • Determination

  • Optimism

These words guide almost every decision I make, whether I’m aware of it or not. I thrive in situations that reward initiative, persistence, and a positive mindset. Put me in a room full of pessimistic people who don’t want to accomplish anything, who rely on others to get things done, and I can’t wait to leave.

That discomfort isn’t about judgment. It’s about misalignment. Once you know your own values, you start to see which people, jobs, and environments energize you, and which ones quietly deplete you.

Why Defining Your Personal Values Brings Clarity

Just being aware of your core values helps you:

  • Explain why certain things matter to you. You’ll stop second-guessing your emotional responses and start understanding them.

  • Quickly pinpoint what feels “off.” When something bothers you but you can’t explain why, chances are your values are being challenged.

  • Evaluate new opportunities with confidence. Whether you’re considering a new project, relationship, or job offer, your values provide a lens for clarity.

Imagine interviewing for a job and asking yourself: Will this position allow me to act on my value of creativity? Or choosing a partner and reflecting: Does this person respect my value of integrity?

That kind of self-awareness helps you make decisions that feel right in your bones, not just on paper.

How to Discover Your Core Values

In our free values worksheet, we’ve included a list of 88 common value words to help you start this process. (P.S. it's an excerpt from our recent livestream: Unlock Your Inner Wisdom.) Your task is simple, but impactful:

  1. Review the list. Circle any word that resonates with you, even if you’re not sure why.

  2. Narrow it down to five. Ask yourself which values best represent your ideal self across four key areas of life: relationships, career, personal growth, and well-being.

  3. Rank them. Put them in order of importance. Which one feels non-negotiable? Which one supports the others?

Once you have your top five values, keep them somewhere visible, on your phone lock screen, a sticky note on your desk, or as part of your journaling practice. When faced with choices large or small, return to these words as your compass.

A More Meaningful Life Is One Aligned with Your Values

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s alignment. You won’t always be able to live in perfect sync with your values, but even small shifts can make a big difference in your energy and sense of purpose.

When you know your values, you start to live on purpose instead of drifting. You become clearer about what to say yes to, and more confident saying no to what doesn’t serve you. You start making decisions with more ease and less doubt.

If you’ve been searching for a meaningful life or wondering how to find your purpose, don’t look outside yourself. Start by defining what matters most to you.

Your personal values are the blueprint. Everything else builds from there.
