Building Sustainable Routines: Why Willpower Isn't Enough

When you’re committing to a new habit, it can be challenging to rely on willpower alone. Whether you’re feeling scattered and stagnant or just tired of starting over every Monday, my newest workbook, Activate Your Routine, is your 3-step guide to designing a daily rhythm that works with your energy, not against it.

The Story Behind Activate Your Routine (Strategy Workbook 3 of 3)

For as long as I can remember, I struggled with the concept of consistency. As a kid, I was the queen of the false start. I wanted to try everything, but could stick with nothing. Tap dance lasted three classes. Ballet made it through two.

I lived with a constant, low-grade guilt that I lacked perseverance. I told myself I was flighty and undisciplined. (Echoes of what I’d heard from other people!)

That guilt followed me into adulthood. If I was resting on the couch, I was lazy. If I wasn’t productive every second of the day, I was failing. I thought discipline meant forcing myself to do things I hated, over and over again, by sheer force of will.

How My Houseplants Changed My Outlook

I wrote the third workbook in this series because I finally realized I’d been doing it wrong. The shift happened with something small: Houseplants.

A few years ago, I didn’t own a single plant. I told myself the story: "I kill everything. I’m not a plant person." One Saturday, after tagging along to a plant store, I realized how much I loved being surrounded by greenery. So, I bought few little plants and gave it another shot. This time, I didn't treat plant care like a chore. I treated it like a ritual. Slowly, watering the plants became one of my favorite parts of the day. It wasn't an obligation, it was a moment of peace. It also became an easy way for me to predictably regulate my nervous system in the morning.

That’s when it clicked: Routines only stick when they’re built on joy, not willpower.

I needed to stop trying to force myself into someone else’s version of a "perfect morning" (the 5 AM club, ice baths, intense cardio) and start creating a container that actually felt safe for me, based on how I felt in the moment.

Now, my daily priority is pretty simple: I do what I want. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve got responsibilities, but I let my energy lead. You’d be surprised how much joy you can find in your daily routine by changing things up to match how you’re feeling.

In this workbook, we dive into the science of habit stacking and how to identify your motivation engine. We look at why 40% of your day is autopilot behavior, and how to program that autopilot to serve you instead of drain you.

Why Sustainable Routines are the Theme of Workbook #3

You might be wondering, "Why are routines the last book in the series? Shouldn't I get my schedule in order first?"

Here’s the truth: You can’t build a sustainable routine for a person you're pretending to be.

If you try to build a routine (Workbook 3) before you’ve tapped into your Intuition (Workbook 1) or embraced your Authenticity (Workbook 2), you’ll just build a more efficient prison.

You’ll build a routine based on "shoulds" (I should wake up early, I should meal prep this way, I should do my least favorite thing first) and you’ll eventually rebel against it because it doesn't align with where you’re at.

We end with sustainable routines because once you know who you are and what you want, a routine becomes the trellis that supports your growth, not the cage that restricts it. It transforms from a list of chores into a flowy recipe for your day, one that’s totally open to modification.

This workbook is for the grounded architect version of you that’s ready to build a life that makes consistency feel welcome.
